20120423 Baptism gives souls new life 聖洗賦予靈魂新生

The first sacrament which all Catholics receive is baptism. Baptism cleanses a person of all his sins and incorporates him into Christ.
Matter and form
The form of baptism is “I baptize you, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.”
The matter of baptism is natural water. Father John Hardon, S.J. author of The Question and Answer Catholic Catechism, writes, “The water of baptism is to be applied to the person’s head. This is commonly done by pouring, or ablution; but it may also be done by dipping under water or immersion; and, in exceptional cases, by sprinkling or aspersion. In every case, however, the water must flow on the person’s head.”
In baptism, the form and matter are to be united. Bishop Louis LaRavoire Morrow, author of My Catholic Faith, writes, “The form must be said at the same time the water is poured, and must be said by the same person pouring the water, so that everything takes place as one act.”
Minister and recipient
The ordinary minister of baptism is the bishop or pastor, or a priest or deacon properly delegated, but in case of necessary, anyone, even a non-Catholic, who has the use of reason, may baptize; that person then becomes an extraordinary minister of baptism.
Regarding the recipient of baptism, Father Hardon writes, “A person being baptized after reaching the age of reason must believe the basic truths of the Christian faith, be sorry for his sins, at least out of fear of God’s just punishments, and sincerely want to receive baptism.”
Effects and necessity
Baptism takes away original sin, actual sins, and all punishment due to sins. Sanctifying grace is infused into the soul of the baptized.
An indelible character is imprinted on the soul, who becomes a member of the Church, subject to her laws, and capable of receiving the other sacraments.
According to Father Bennet Kelley, CP, “The sacramental grace of baptism helps us to live as children of God, makes it easier for us to believe in God and to act accordingly, and lessens our inclinations to evil.”
Through the sacrament of baptism a person becomes a child of God the Father, a co-heir with God the Son, and a living temple of God the Holy Spirit.
Baptism is necessary for the salvation of all, because Christ said, “Unless a man be born again of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.”
The Baltimore Catechism states: “Those who through no fault of their own have not received the sacrament of baptism can be saved through what is called baptism of blood or baptism of desire.”
An unbaptized person who suffers martyrdom receives baptism of blood. Father Hardon writes, “Baptism of desire is the implicit desire for baptism of water by a person who makes an act of perfect love of God, based on faith and with a sincere sorrow for his sins.”
According to Father Hardon, “The fate of the unbaptized infants is left to the mercy of God. It is generally taught that the souls of those who depart this life with original sin on their souls, but without actual sin, go to limbo.”
“According to St. Thomas, limbo is a place of perfect natural happiness but without the supernatural vision of God to which we have no natural right.”
Bishop Morrow points out that theologians have suggested various ways in which babies who die without baptism might be saved. But since this is only pious belief, parents should not neglect the baptism of their children.
